New World Screwworm Resources
The New World Screwworm (NWS) is a pest -- it is not a disease! Any warm-blooded animal is susceptible to New World Screwworm, including cattle, horses, dogs, cats, etc. Prevention is key! It is not a time to panic; instead practice prevention, fly control and routine observation of your animals.
Check your animals daily.
- Look for any open wound - it does not have to be very big. Even a tick bite can attract the fly.
- Cover and treat any wounds
- Use fly control products to reduce exposure
Infestations are very treatable if caught early. Report any suspected cases. Do Not Move the animal. Contact TAHC or your veterinarian.
This is an evolving issue. Not all government and animal health websites are updated immediately. Most are updated by end-of-day.
